Statement on Overtime Pay

Burlington, VT, Sept. 10, 2003

BURLINGTON—I applaud Senator Harkin's victory today on behalf of working men and women across the country. Passage of his amendment to stop the Bush Administration's new overtime rules is a welcome show of support for the forty hours work week and other vital labor protections.

The overtime regulation is only the latest in a series of anti-worker policies put forward by this Administration. They dismantled the ergonomics rule, fought an increase in the minimum wage and now they want to cut overtime pay. With the Harkin amendment, Democrats are fighting back. I urge House-Senate negotiators to preserve the Harkin amendment in conference.
