The Largest Banks and Financial Institutions in the U.S., as of 2011

Overview

This page looks at the 96 largest U.S. financial institutions. These are banks, investment firms, insurance companies, and some which are hybrids of these. It's not complete-- sometimes, such as for PIMCO, I wasn't able to find all the data for a financial institution. So you should consider this presentation a rough overview of these businesses, and the details may change when I am able to add more information.

The institutions are described here in 4 ways: ranked by 'Total Assets', ranked by 'Other People's Money', the 42 Heaviest Hitters, and at the end, an alphabetical table of all these big institutions with their financial data that I have so far.

Update, July 2012: I've just found some new and very relevant information in a post by The Contrary Investor, regarding financial derivatives. As it turns out:

"...97% of total US Banking system derivatives exposure can be found in five institutions. The table below lists those institutions alongside their notional derivatives exposure as the first quarter of this year [2012] concluded...

"It just so happens JP Morgan is the largest holder of financial derivatives contracts…on planet Earth."

-- (The Contrary Investor, July 2012)

I work this information into the "Heaviest Hitters" charts below.

Some more info about these terms I'm using:

Total Assets

"Total Assets" are, roughly, the firm's own money. Total Assets include such things as cash, property, accounts receivable, bonds and stocks. They do not include the deposits of their customers, investment accounts they are managing for customers, etc. NOTE: Normally Total Assets are at least partially offset by "Total Liabilities", but I'm not showing those here at this time. 'Total Assets' table

"OPM", or "Other People's Money"

This is a measure I have created. It is the sum of customer deposits (savings and checking accounts and the like) and/or Assets Under Management/Assets Under Administration. (AUM/AUA). Assets Under Management are things like mutual funds, 401ks, and other investments that you let somebody manage for you. OPM measures how much money the institution has "under its wings" or under its control. Looked at another way, how much of their money other people have entrusted to its management.
Often, institutions with a large amount of AUM/AUA OPM have very small Total Assets of their own.

How such an institution "manages" (invests) this money on behalf of its customers can have an far bigger impact on the economy and markets than its own in-house assets would by themselves.

Therefore it is important to look at OPM as well as Total Assets to get a truer idea of the economic power of a firm. 'Other People's Money' table

"Total Throw Weight"

This is also a term I've invented. It is the sum of the institution's own Total Assets, its customers' deposits, and/or all of its Assets Under Management. In other words, this is how much money the institution has control over.
I wanted to look at Total Throw Weight because this reflects how much influence the institution can have on the economy by moving around the money under its control.

I chose 42 "Heaviest Hitters" by using a $200 billion cutoff. If the institution's Total Throw Weight was $200 billion or more, I called it a "Heavy Hitter".

Total Throw Weight
The 42 "Heaviest Hitters" $15,986 billion $5,408 billion $36,659 billion $58,051 billion
All 96 On This List $18,204 billion $6,611 billion $37,722 billion $62,537 billion
All banks In the U.S. (7,723 of them total)   - $7,025 billion - -
Some more points to consider:

There a total of 7,723 institutions in the U.S. whose depositors are insured under the FDIC, and a grand total of $7,025 billion in total deposits in the United States in 2008.[10] Comparing that to the table just above, you will realize that the 96 institutions on this list hold $6,611 billion in deposits out of that $7,025 billion, and the 42 "Heaviest Hitters" alone hold $5,408 billion, or 77% of all deposits in the United States! The U.S. banking industry is indeed highly concentrated.
